HOW TO FIND THE PERFECT RED LIPSTICK

Finding the perfect red lip is often intimidating... it's such a bold color that it can feel foreign on your face if worn incorrectly. I have heard time and again that women often WANT to wear one but just don't know how to find the right shade. So before you get dressed up for those upcoming holiday parties or family pics, use these tips to crack the code on Red Lips. [video here]

It's all about the TONE: Warm, Neutral, or Cool

Knowing where you fall on the spectrum, as far as your skin tone goes is the biggest piece of the puzzle. Once you know that- choosing your Red will be much easier.

What determines Warm or Cool? The amount of yellow or blue in the mix

This same theory applies with our skin tones we all have underlying tones and depending on the amount of yellow or blue in our skin, we read either warm, neutral or cool.

How to find the right shade of lipstick for your skintone

How do we determine our undertone? Go down this list and see where your majority of ‘yes’s’ land.

  • noticeable pink or yellow tint to the skin? neither?

  • jewelry preferences- what do you gravitate towards? silver (cool) or gold (warm)?

  • white shirt test- does white wash you out (cool) or make you glow (warm)?

  • burn or tan in the sun?- pink/cool skin will burn easily, the more yellow the more you tan.

  • vein color? cool = purplish veins, neutral= bluish veins, warm= greenish veins

Finding the perfect shade of lipstick:

Once you know your skin tone, you'll want to pick a lipstick tone that falls on the SAME side of the spectrum... if you are wearing a tone from the opposite side- the pairing will feel foreign and unnatural.

Here are a few of my favorite red lipstick formulas:

Liquid Longwear Formula

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink

  • Cool: Shot Caller

  • Neutral: Dancer

  • Warm: Ground Breaker

Satin Bullet Formula

NYX Shout Loud Satin Lipstick

  • Cool: Red Haute

  • Neutral: Wife Goals

  • Warm: The Best

Comfort Shine Formula

Milani Color Balm Lipstick

  • Cool: Nylon

  • Neutral: Seduce

  • Warm: Roleplay

Last tip: When you’re out shopping- grab a few reds and put them next to each other to compare. It is much easier to spot the tones this way versus just looking at one tube alone. If you can find some natural light and hold the lipstick up to your lips, then again compare colors and see which tone looks most flattering with your skin.
