6 TIPS FOR MORE GOOD HAIR DAYS

Good hair days may be partially luck, but there's also a rhyme and reason to achieving them more often. After 17 years as a hair stylist, I like to think I have seen it all- and these are the tips I would suggest for having more good hair days. [video here]

PLAN AHEAD

  • Plan your wash cycle according to your schedule- Look at your week and decide where you will have more time to spend on washing and styling, it’s pretty hard to have a good hair day when you are rushed. Also look at when your workouts will be etc., so that you can schedule your wash days after those. A little planning of your styles for the week takes a lot of the guess work out.

  • Night time prep to save time in the morning- Whenever you can begin the styling process the night before, you set yourself up for a quicker morning. To start be sure you are sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase to lessen the amount of friction and therefor frizz in the night. You can preserve your style overnight by sleeping in a loose bun or braid as well (using a silk scrunchie or coil hair tie for less friction) and even apply your dry shampoo at bed time so it can absorb oil while you sleep.

STYLE SMARTER

  • Carefully pick products that correspond with your hair type- I have phrase I use often… ‘hair has memory’ meaning that it will lock in and revert back to the way it gets styled after the initial wash. So, if you spend a little more time and use the right products up front, you’re much more likely to get 2-3 days of good hair in the days following, because you can coax hair back to the memory you created. Good products make the ‘memory’ that much stronger!

  • Refresh hair style in between washes- If you’ve done the work up front on the initial style like mentioned above, try refreshing (instead of completely re-styling) the hair and helping it revert to its full glory- you may not even need to add heat to achieve this. Dry shampoo at the roots and/or switching your parting may be enough for second day volume. Then take a nice hair oil and smooth it through the ends to help day old curls or waves bounce back and look smooth again. Curly haired friends can try a spritz of water followed by some oil or curl cream to help revive locks and smooth frizz.

KEEP UP ON MAINTENANCE

  • Regular trims will keep your style in shape every 6-8 weeks- Its hard to have great hair days when your cut loses its initial shape and when hair ends start to get dried out. This usually happens around 8 weeks, so keeping up on regular trims is key!

  • Scalp care and moisture treatments 2-4 times per month- The foundation of good hair is a healthy scalp, so set aside one day every couple of weeks to do a nice scalp detox with a scalp scrub or detox shampoo. And finally give your hair the moisture it needs to really shine and bounce with a good mask about twice a month.
